Five big changes to Google Maps that affect you right now

Google maps has recently implemented a complete overhaul of its interface, both in terms of look and functionality. The latest overhaul is the most comprehensive this service has seen in some time. Several new features have appeared from time to time, though recently, Google has really focused on user experience and instant information. Various features from search and business listings aim at providing a tonne of information in the new maps interface.

What does this mean for your business? Well, some time ago, Google changed its ‘Google Places’ service to ‘Google Business Listings’. If you have not optimised your business listing for search and maps, you will lose direct online revenue. There are many integrated Google tools that utilise business listing information and if you either: do not have a listing, or, it was created in Google Places and has not been optimised for Business listings, you will miss opportunities to rank well in search, lose potential visitor traffic, and miss out on conversions.

So, what’s new on Google Maps?

  1. Instant Information, Reviews, and OTA Booking
When searching in Google maps for either a business or address (that has an optimised business listing at that address), instant results now appear in relation to said address. This information contains address, photos, website and other contact info, reviews, and the ability to book via any OTA listing subscription (shown as an advertisment).
  2. Amazing Exploration
Google has combined a number of tools it has been working on extensively to provide an amazing new exploration experience. These include 3D multi plane views, HD image carousel, and the new Street View Pegman has been turned into a virtual tour guide. The new Google Maps allows you to easily access photo tours, photos and street view. Also, you can now double click on a spot on the map and quickly zoom to street view.
  3. Live Updates
Live updates make getting around much easier. The new maps allow you to navigate to a place, and check live traffic, best walking routes, local terrain, and even see road works to avoid!
  4. Need Coffee?
Google has introduced highly relevant search integration in Google Maps. Simply navigate to a city and type in Coffee (or anything else you want to find). You will instantly be displayed local coffee listings and related results. Hit the 'List All Results' or hover over a listing and see what happens…
  5. Trip Planning Tool
When navigating from one place to another you can now add stops along the way and plan your route to take in sights or visit certain places. Simply enter your route or destination and click the plus sign, then click the ‘add a destination’ and enter where you would like to stop on the way.
